Justine and Marble — August 19, 2022

Justine and Marble

~ Justine and Marble ~

Two years ago, Justine adopted Marble. They have since formed a special bond and each day has been a bit brighter because they have each other.

In 2020, just before the first Covid-19 lockdown in New Zealand, Justine wanted to give a cat a forever home. After some searching, she saw a post by the Lonely Miaow who had some cats looking for homes. A friend drove with Justine to the rescue. Once they arrived, they met with a stripy Tabby kitty named Marble. Initially, Marble was timid, however, when she walked into her new home there was no doubt that she was there to stay.

Just before adopting Marble, Justine was unfortunately in a car accident, which led to her needing crutches due to fracturing a vertebra. Having Marble brought a lot more happiness to her recovery! While she was resting, her feline friend would bring her gifts, often consisting of either clothes pegs, bits of foil or leaves.

A year later, Justine and Marble decided to move to a different city – Wellington. It was a big adjustment for them both and was difficult doing so during a pandemic, but Justine is thankful she had Marble by her side through it all. No matter what, she can always brighten her human’s day.

Having Marble has improved Justine’s life immensely. Whether Marble is stretched out, showing her fluffy tummy, standing on her back feet like a ‘meer-cat’ for her meat paste treat, or posing for a photo for the ‘gram, she never fails to bring a smile to Justine’s face. As well as this, Marble enjoys ‘helping’ her human to re-organise her record collection, chewing on books, watching birds outside the window and chasing ping pong balls that always seem to go missing.

At the start of each work day, Marble always walks out with Justine down the stairs of her flat and, more often than not, is always there when she returns to greet her. They love the end of the day as this is when they can simply enjoy each other’s company and curl up together.

Marble hasn’t just impacted Justine’s life, but many in their community. She managed to sway Justine’s downstairs neighbour from someone who hated cats to someone who enjoys her company. While she is still quite shy, Marble’s sweet personality shines through to those who take the time to get to know her.

The bond that Justine and Marble share is so special. They have been there for each other through thick and thin, as well as sharing love and joy into every day.

Sian, Bean, Luna and Rory — August 1, 2022

Sian, Bean, Luna and Rory

~ Sian, Bean, Luna and Rory ~

Some years ago, Sian welcomed Bean into her life. Since then, two doggos named Luna and Rory have become part of their family.

When she was 14 years old, Sian struggled with her mental health. It was a very dark time for her. Wanting to help, Sian’s parents decided to adopt a cat for her from the local SPCA. After some searching, one in particular stood out. The moment Sian sat down, the cat walked right up to her, sat on her lap and dug her claws in whenever she tried to move. There was no doubt in Sian’s mind that she had been chosen. So, she and her parents went home with a new furry friend named Bean.

Having Bean changed Sian’s life. She knew she had her feline friend right there through all of life’s ups and downs. Bean was a source of comfort for her human through the toughest of times and, in turn, helped her to be who she is today.

A few years later, Sian and her partner were looking to adopt a canine companion. It didn’t take long before they found two beautiful doggos named Rory and Luna. Both Sian and her partner knew these two were the perfect additions to their family and decided to adopt them then and there.

During some of the toughest times in Sian’s life, she’s always found comfort in her furbabies. When she returns home from work, no matter what kind of day she has had, she knows that Bean, Rory and Luna will all be there at the door to meet her. This trio never fails to make Sian’s day.

At the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sian experienced a lot of losses. She and her partner had to postpone their wedding, they had job losses, and more. This was very challenging for Sian and she found herself in a dark place. However, throughout this difficult time, Bean, Rory and Luna were little rays of sunshine. Luna especially helped her human by snuggling up with Sian if she was sad and always encouraged her to go out and take her for a walk. This made the pandemic feel less daunting.

Something that Sian enjoys doing with Rory and Luna is going out and exploring. Whether going up into the hills or into the bush, simply being with them in nature brings Sian a sense of joy and tranquillity. When at home, they enjoy snuggling up, which Bean is often more than happy to take part in, too.

The bond that Sian, Bean, Rory and Luna share is truly special. They have helped and supported one another through many tough times. However, they continue to share unconditional love and endless happiness and know that no matter what, they have each other.

Lorna and Ryleigh — July 29, 2022

Lorna and Ryleigh

~ Lorna and Ryleigh ~

Over a year ago, Lorna and Ryleigh met for the first time. Since then, they have formed a beautiful bond and have helped each other through so much. Every day is infinitely better just by being together.

For while, Lorna had been fostering kittens from her local SPCA. Just before Christmas 2020, as she was dropping off a kitten, she left with two brothers, Fred and George. They both had tummy bugs which had to be monitored for a week. After recovering, they both showed their true colours; George was very confident and wanted a lot of attention. Fred, on the other hand, was a combination of energetic and calm. It didn’t take long before Lorna knew that Fred had found his forever home with her, and so, she renamed him Ryleigh.

Having Ryleigh has been life-changing for Lorna. When things are difficult, Lorna knows she always has her feline friend right there. On dark days, he’s her ray of sunshine. Recently, Lorna went through a big life change, and having Ryleigh really helped her through it. Even when he’s being a bit naughty, Ryleigh never fails to bring a smile to his human’s face and can always brighten her day.

Due to Ryleigh’s calm nature, Lorna hopes that, one day, he can be a therapy cat. He’s even harness trained, which has allowed him to join his human at work, where, of course, he was a hit. Everyone he meets, he can always brighten their day.

Both Lorna and Ryleigh enjoy playing together and going on adventures. She especially loves watching Ryleigh as he explores his surroundings and experience new things. Recently, they even went to the beach together. There, he was fascinated with the ocean and the waves as they splashed ashore. Seeing him take such an interest in the simple things helps Lorna to appreciate them, too.

As well as this, having just moved house, to take in their new neighbourhood, Lorna and Ryleigh go on car rides together. While Lorna has a cup of coffee, she and her feline friend people and bird watch. This is time they get to simply enjoy each other’s company and the serenity of sitting there together.

It’s obvious just how much Lorna and Ryleigh have impacted each other. Through thick and thin, they know they have one another to help them through anything. The love and happiness they share has been life-changing, and they will only continue to flourish together.

Mary and Daisy — July 27, 2022

Mary and Daisy

~ Mary and Daisy ~

Seven years ago, Mary welcomed British Shorthair kitten, Daisy, into her life. Since then, they have changed each other’s lives for the better.

In 2015, Mary’s cat, Patch, had three kittens. She was unable to keep them all and so, when they were 8 weeks old, two of them found their forever homes. However, Mary wanted to keep one of the kittens who looked a lot like Patch.

Sadly, in 2019, Mary lost Patch. She was devastated and heartbroken. Having Daisy, Patch’s daughter, meant so much. During this time, she comforted Mary and provided her with unconditional love and lots of cuddles. It was difficult for the both of them, but together, they got through it.

Not only has Daisy helped Mary, but she has also been supported through her anxieties. Daisy has always been a very anxious and shy cat. Mary helps her by simply being supportive and allowing her to go at her own pace.

Something that Mary and Daisy enjoy is playing together. Daisy has quite the collection of toys and both she and her human always set aside time each day to play. When they feel more like relaxing, they love spending time outside in the garden together. Any time they get to spend with each other always brings them joy.

The bond that Mary and Daisy share is so special. They have helped each other through thick and thin and know that, no matter what happens, they have one another.

Mary and Zoe — July 15, 2022

Mary and Zoe

~ Mary and Zoe ~

A few years ago, Mary and Zoe met. Since then, they have greatly impacted each other’s lives and continue to fill each day with love and happiness.

In 2019, Mary had been looking for a cat. Sadly, her cat had passed away, which left her devastated. She wanted to welcome another feline friend into her life. So, Mary went to a vet clinic to meet with some of the cats looking for homes. While there, a small black kitten walked right up to her and demanded to be held. At that moment, Mary knew she and this kitten, Zoe, were meant to be.

For a while, Mary had been living on her own. Once she adopted Zoe, she felt less alone and they became the best of friends. Shortly after bringing Zoe home, she and Mary moved to a dairy farm. This proved to be great as it allowed Zoe to have more space to enjoy and to help out around the farm in the form of being a mouser.

Whenever Mary is doing work on the farm, Zoe is always happy to keep her company. Whether doing chores, gardening or other jobs, Zoe is right there. When not working, she enjoys exploring the farm more and loves going for walks with Mary. Time they get to spend together never fails to make their days!

The bond that Mary and Zoe have formed is so special. They help one another and share so much love and happiness.

Chloe and Felix — July 11, 2022

Chloe and Felix

~ Chloe and Felix ~

Six years ago, Chloe met Felix. From the very first moment they met, Chloe knew he was the perfect cat for her family. Since then, they have formed a very special bond.

Chloe had been wanting to adopt a cat for a while and decided to visit a local shelter in Birkenhead, New Zealand. She met a friendly and quirky moggy who instantly stood out to her. As soon as they met, she knew he was coming home with her. So, Chloe adopted him then and there and named him Felix.

Not long after adopting Felix was it apparent he had some health issues. He had pneumonia which very nearly took his life. Seeing him go through this was immensely difficult for Chloe, but she stayed by his side through everything. Thankfully, Felix pulled through and he continues to fill his human’s day with endless joy and laughter with his antics.

Having Felix has impacted Chloe’s life hugely. The last few years have presented her with a lot of challenges, namely experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses. However, Felix, and Chloe’s other cat, Ziggy, were always there to comfort her. When she was feeling especially defeated, Felix would snuggle up and remind her that she wasn’t alone. When Chloe had her children, Felix immediately accepted them into his heart. This meant the world to her.

Not only has Felix had an impact on Chloe and her family, but also their whole neighbourhood. When he first moved into the neighbourhood, he enjoyed learning from the resident tomcat. Now, Felix has taken on that role. He is often seen protecting his territory – and the local female cats – and meeting with friends. Recently, a new kitten moved in. Felix has taken it upon himself to teach his new friend all his tricks and train him to become the next tomcat.

The bond that Chloe and Felix share is so special. They have brought so much joy and love into each other’s lives through simply being there. Chloe saved Felix as a kitten, and Felix helped Chloe through her darkest times.

Lucy and Xena — June 22, 2022

Lucy and Xena

~ Lucy and Xena ~

Five years ago, Lucy welcomed Xena into her life. Since then, they have become best friends and have impacted each other hugely.

One of Lucy’s friends’ cats had recently had a litter of kittens. When she went to saw photos of them, she instantly fell in love with the only tortoiseshell kitten. Once the kitten was old enough, Lucy jumped at the chance to adopt her and name her Xena.

For as long as she can remember, Lucy has been a cat lover and her family has always had cats. However, to Lucy, Xena is different, special. They have become best friends, and they know they’re there for each other, Lucy can talk about anything with her furry friend, sometimes she even gets a response in the form of a meow! When she’s feeling sad, Xena senses this and comes running from wherever she may have been sleeping to comfort her human.

Having Xena has had a huge impact on Lucy. Her workplace is very high-pressure and can take a toll on her at the end of each day. However, at the end of each day, when she gets home, she’s always greeted by an excited kitty – this never fails to turn around a tough day.

For a while now, Lucy has struggled with chronic migraines. These impact her daily life and mean she has to stay in bed for periods of time. When she experiences a migraine, Xena joins her in bed, curls up and doesn’t leave her side. She lets Lucy know that she’s there and is looking after her.

Since adopting Xena, she and Lucy have created their own bedtime routine. Xena will go to bed and wait for Lucy. Once she’s in bed, Xena walks up to her, purring and, once she’s comfortable, lays down and places her paw on her human’s face. It’s time they get to enjoy together as it’s peaceful and shows the love they share.

Lucy and Xena share a beautiful bond. Through thick and thin, they’ve been there for each other. Since they met, Lucy and Xena have brought one another so much comfort, joy and love.

Alice and Buster — June 13, 2022

Alice and Buster

~ Alice and Buster ~

Last year, Tomcat, Buster, was finally able to stop searching for his forever home. When Alice rescued him, not only did his life change but so did hers. Since then, Buster has had a huge impact on those around him and has brought Alice so much love and happiness.

In late 2021, Alice was told about a wandering Tomcat. He had been in the area for quite some time after being abandoned and was obviously in need of some urgent veterinary care. Being the founder of Kitty Kingdom Wellington, she went out and set a cat trap. It took some time, but finally, he found his way into the trap and was taken into Alice’s care.

Seeing him up close, Alice noticed a large wound on his side. She took him back to Kitty Kingdom and let him rest while she tried to find a vet who could help them. It was evident the Tomcat, whom Alice named Buster, was in a lot of pain and needed to be seen as soon as possible. They went to the Wellington After Hours Veterinary Clinic as it was very late and everywhere else had been booked up.

Once at the vet, Buster was immediately sedated and taken into surgery. There, they treated his wound and neutered him at the same time. Had he not been brought in when he was, it was likely he wouldn’t have made it. The surgery went smoothly, however, he tested positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Alice was faced with a decision: to have Buster euthanised or to take him home. It was an easy choice to make and she took him home to recover.

Alice ensured Buster had a room all to himself for 48 hours while he recovered. After this, he was let out into the rest of the house. While he was afraid, he wasn’t aggressive when he gained some freedom. Alice sat and talked to Buster for hours, trying to gain his trust. Eventually, he let her pat him, which progressed to him sitting on her lap and giving her the same love he was receiving.

One week later, Alice took in three stray kittens. As she was checking them over, Buster made an unusual noise which the kittens seemed to react positively to. Due to him being a Tomcat and having FIV, Alice didn’t want him to interact with the kittens for their own safety. However, Buster was becoming increasingly worried and frustrated at not being allowed near the kittens. After a lot of persuasion on his part, Alice reluctantly let him and the kittens sniff one another. There was nothing but love between them, and Buster even began grooming the kittens!

The more Buster interacted with the kittens, the more he wanted to be around them. Alice allowed him 10 minutes per day, which gradually built up to two hours, which was closely monitored. Now, Buster can spend as much time with any kittens who come through the rescue. Alice trusts him and he has become a full-time foster dad to all the kittens at Kitty Kingdom.

Before Christmas 2021, Alice took Buster to get some infected teeth taken out. This was a huge relief for both of them. It meant he no longer suffered from the pain, and Alice felt reassured it was safer for the kittens he cared for, even though he was always gentle. Unfortunately, not long after, it was discovered he was in the final stages of renal failure and had a large growth inside his mouth. It was too risky to have it removed, so Alice decided to keep him with her and monitor him.

Due to concerns over the growth potentially rupturing, Alice limited Buster’s time with the kittens, much to his disgust. A few months later, Alice saw Buster chewing on a cat bed. Fearing the worst, she checked his mouth in case the growth had ruptured. When she looked, she found that it had shrunk! Following a vet appointment, Alice was told Buster’s growth was no longer of any concern and, as a result, could resume being a foster dad.

Despite his health issues, Buster shows each and every kitten at Kitty Kingdom so much love and affection. Alice continues to monitor his health and wellbeing to make sure he’s as happy as he can be. He has become King of Kitty Kingdom, impacting both humans and felines alike, just by being himself. Not only this, but his story has even been turned into a book to be shared with people near and far! All proceeds from his book, ‘Grandpa Buster of Kitty Kingdom,’ go back to Kitty Kingdom, helping him and all his kittens.

The bond that Alice and Buster share is truly special. Alice saved Buster’s life and, every day since, Buster has provided her with endless happiness and unconditional love. While their journey together has had its challenges, together, they continue to make each day so much brighter.

Such A Punk Pets — June 8, 2022

Such A Punk Pets

~ Such A Punk Pets ~

A few years ago, wig maker, Jill Kaplan, made a funky wig for a friend’s dog. Since then, she has gone on to make many more wigs for pets through her business, Such A Punk Pets

Jill has been a wig-maker for over 20 years. Before starting her business, she was feeling somewhat lost. She wasn’t sure what she wanted to be doing in life For as long as she can remember, she has always been creative and making new things. Around the same time she was questioning what she wanted to do, a friend asked her to make a mohawk for her dog for a punk rocker Halloween costume. Jill was more than happy to fulfil this request and was ecstatic with the end result.

After making her first dog-friendly mohawk, Jill discovered a new passion. Making the first mohawk filled her with joy, and she began getting requests from other friends. Soon, she decided to make it into a business, and Such A Punk Pets was born.

Not long after starting Such A Punk Pets, Jill got a very special order. A dog named Myles arrived at the Fly Away Home rescue and went to a fospice (foster and hospice) home. His fospice mother asked Jill to make Myles some mohawks and it was the best thing for him.

While Myles’s health was declining, he was always excited to wear one of his mohawks. Whenever his fospice mum put one on him, he would start bouncing around like a puppy. When they went out for a walk, they always received many compliments. Sadly, it wasn’t long before he crossed the rainbow bridge, but knowing that he was filled with happiness before this because of his mohawks inspired Jill to continue her work to bring the same happiness to others.

One of Jill’s favourite things about Such A Punk Pets is seeing all the happy pets and pet parents. When a new photo pops up or she reads a positive review, it means the world to her. Jill especially loves seeing cats and dogs wearing her mohawks in person, whether she’s selling them at an event or just out and about. Knowing she made something that brings joy to so many people and animals encourages Jill to continue making and improving her mohawk styles.

Being her own boss has been life-changing for Jill. Having a sense of freedom helps a lot with her creativity and to express herself. Because of this, Jill is constantly looking into new ways to improve her wig styles and designs. It’s her happy place and means a lot that she gets to do this as a job.

If you would like to get a funky mohawk for your furbaby, check out Such A Punk Pets’ page! Jill has such a passion for what she does and, of course, enjoys sharing her love of animals and style!

Sara, Charlie and Keith — June 1, 2022

Sara, Charlie and Keith

~ Sara, Charlie and Keith ~

Nine years ago, Sara and her daughter, Charlie, met Keith, a black and white cat, who had been waiting day in, day out, for his forever home. From the moment they laid eyes on him, they knew he had found his forever home.

In 2013, while volunteering at a local cat rescue, Sara and Charlie met a very sick little black and white kitten. He was brought in with the cat flu and had gastrointestinal issues. After a month, he still wasn’t getting any better. Charlie had fallen in love with him. He would follow her everywhere and climb on her shoulders as she worked with Sara at the rescue.

Because of how much he had impacted her daughter, Sara decided to take him to a vet and got as many tests done as possible. Before adopting him, she wanted to make sure it was safe as she already had several other cats at home. The very next day, being Charlie’s 10th birthday, they went to the rescue and adopted the kitten! From that moment, he had found his forever home and a new name – Keith.

While he had many health issues, Keith shared his big personality with everyone. It took four months of close monitoring but Sara helped nurse him to health. What has been really special is the bond that he and Charlie share. As someone with autism, Charlie found it hard to interact with her peers. Keith became her best friend and helped provide her with that connection. He waits for her every day to return from school and happily plays with her whenever she wants to.

Early on, Sara found that Keith had a passion for arts and crafts. He has become quite an artist and does a lot of paintings. As well as this, he is also happy to help Charlie in any arts and crafts project she may be working on.

Having Keith has brought so much joy into Sara’s life. Wherever he goes, he spreads happiness. Even on days that are challenging, having Keith makes everything a bit brighter. There’s just something about him that makes people smile, no matter what.

At the start of the Covid-19 lockdown, Charlie wanted to start an Instagram account for Keith, to share the joy he brings her with the world. Through this page, they share the ups and downs that Keith experiences as a result of his health issues, both physical and mental. However, Sara and Charlie hope that by sharing Keith with the world, they’re also sharing the positivity he brings.

The impact that Keith has had on his humans has been huge. He has brought so much happiness and love into Sara and Charlie’s lives. Each day since adopting him has been made so much better simply because he’s there for them.
