Jenifer and Bella — July 7, 2021

Jenifer and Bella

~ Jenifer and Bella ~

Over ten years ago, Jenifer welcomed chocolate Labrador pup, Bella, into her home. Since then, they have formed a very strong and special bond.

In 2011, Jenifer was given a box with a red bow. When she opened it, an excited puppy greeted her! She named the puppy Bella. For both Jenifer and Bella, it was love at first sight.

Having Bella has given Jenifer a lot more freedom and happiness. Jenifer loves being outdoors. She and Bella love going hiking through the woods together. They find many different adventures to go on together. Finding new routes, small animals such as frogs, and more. Their time together is something they both treasure.

Ever since day one, Bella has had a lot of love to give. If Jenifer is feeling upset or stressed, Bella is always there to support and comfort her. No matter what, she is always there for her human. Every day, Bella is Jenifer’s alarm clock and encourages her to go out for her daily walks.

Since joining Jenifer’s family, despite being fairly quiet, Bella is always looking out for her humans. She has even been dubbed their ‘nanny-dog’. No matter what, Bella is right there. Sometimes when they are out swimming, Bella may get concerned and, at times, has even jumped in to try save her humans. If Jenifer gets too close to the fireplace, Bella barks a warning to her. Even at night, when coyote howls can be heard, Bella replies to ensure her family’s safety.

When Jenifer’s grandfather was dying, Bella helped support them through this. They would visit him in the hospital, often bringing smiles to all they passed. It not only helped her grandfather, but it helped all the patients and staff to see a friendly and tail-wagging dog walking the halls.

Not only has Bella helped Jenifer, but she was also an inspiration for her first book, UnmaskedUnmasked shares the story of Gary, a raccoon, and his friend Jenny, a rabbit, and the bizarre events that have been happening around their forest and the humans who live just beyond the fence. This was greatly inspired by Jenifer’s life on the farm and, of course, Bella.

The impact that Bella has had on Jenifer is amazing. Over the last decade, Bella has become a big part of her life. There is seldom a family photo without Bella making an appearance. Their bond is truly special, as can be seen in the love and care they have for one another.

Jacinta and Milo — May 10, 2021

Jacinta and Milo

~ Jacinta and Milo ~

Chocolate Labrador, Milo, found his forever home with Jacinta. Since bringing him home, he has added so much light and happiness to those around him.

Eight years ago, Jacinta met Milo through her partner’s mother. She introduced them to a litter. From the first visit, Jacinta fell instantly in love with one puppy in particular; Milo. He was just so sweet and friendly.

From day one, Milo has helped Jacinta very much. Whenever she feels upset or stressed, she knows Milo is right there for her and puts his paw on her leg. He offers her companionship and support 24/7. During the evenings, they both enjoy simply relaxing on the couch, spending time with each other. Having Milo has helped Jacinta to feel calmer and he has greatly reduced her anxiety with his calm yet outgoing personality.

No matter what, Milo can bring a bit of happiness to anyone’s day. Whether it’s Jacinta, her partner, or the wider community, he always knows how to make someone smile. With his big smile and Labrador antics, you can’t not smile when you see him.

Jacinta, her partner, and Milo all enjoy going on adventures together. Together, they often go on holidays and for car rides. They all love doing this and spending time together. Other times, such as when Jacinta returns home from work, she loves being greeted by a wiggly Labrador!

It is obvious for anyone to see how much Jacinta and Milo mean to one another. He is her fur baby, and she and her partner both care so much for him. Milo brings happiness and joy to so many, but the bond he has with Jacinta is so special.

Colina and Will — May 3, 2021

Colina and Will

~ Colina and Will ~

In 2019, Guide Dog puppy, Will, was born. Since then, Will did become a guide dog but is now happily living his best life with Colina. The two are now best friends and help each other immensely in their lives.

Will was born through Guide Dogs New Zealand as part of the W litter. When Will was 9 weeks old, he was introduced to puppy raiser, Colina. When guide dog puppies are born, they spend their first 9 weeks simply just socialising and growing. After this, they undergo formal training so they can become working dogs for those who are blind or visually impaired.

For the first year, Guide Dog puppies live with puppy raisers. Puppy raisers help to not only raise the puppy but to help them properly develop through socialisation and education. This includes taking the dog out to different places, meeting a variety of people and different animals, and more.

During this period, dogs are monitored in their progress. If they do not meet certain criteria, they may then be moved into a different role, such as a mobility or assistance dog, or be adopted out. In Will’s case, he unfortunately did not pass his formal training.

While he couldn’t become a working guide dog, Will was able to be adopted by Colina. At this time, Colina and her family were struggling with the loss of their 12-year-old dog, Charlie. Having Will was immensely helpful and they were thrilled to welcome him into their family. He could bring a smile to anyone’s face and, no matter what, he is always there for his family.

Having Will has helped Colina a lot. Will brings so much happiness to Colina and her family. He brings a sense of calm, even when Colina may be feeling anxious. Not only this, but Will is very gentle and wants to show everyone kindness.

When Colina may feel a bit anxious or stressed, Will reminds her to be present in the moment. He is very intuitive when it comes to others’ emotions, too, so always knows who needs an extra hug!

Both Colina and Will love their time together. They both go out every morning for their daily walk, often along the nearby beach. Occasionally, while at the beach, Colina will set up doggy-playdates for Will. He will happily play in the sand and in the water. He has a mischievous side to him and loves to race around, sometimes with a favourite toy!

The bond between Colina and Will is a very special one. He has become very well known in their community. No matter what, he brings smiles to the faces of anyone who meets him. Will is very loyal, loving and is always happy to be by Colina’s side, through thick and thin. The love between him and Colina is so strong and you can see how much they care for one another.

Ammo — April 19, 2021

~ Ammo ~

In 2020, Ammo, a German Shepherd X Labrador, was welcomed into his forever home.  He and his human share a special bond and have helped one another immensely.

Unfortunately, Ammo’s human was grieving from the loss of their previous dog, Mocha.  Mocha, a sweet, black Cocker Spaniel, meant the world to them, and losing him was devastating.  It was in 2020, Ammo walked right into their life and brought a glimmer of hope and happiness.

It was love at first sight for Ammo’s new human.  Ammo has a black birthmark on his tongue, and to his human, this felt like a connection to Mocha and so it was simply meant to be.  Since then, the two have only become closer and have formed such a special friendship.

Ammo’s human works at Pet First Aid NZ.  Pet First Aid NZ is a course that people can take to learn about how to perform first aid for pets.  This can be extremely helpful to know in case of any emergencies.  There, people learn CPR, recognising poisons and dangerous objects, and more to ensure animals are safe in the event of any emergency.  They run regular courses all across New Zealand.

At the Pet First Aid course, Ammo can be seen helping out!  If Ammo is at a course, students will practise their bandaging skills on him.  He will patiently sit there and wait for the student to finish.  He helps bring a sense of calm to the courses and of course, adds a special canine touch!

When he isn’t helping at first aid courses, Ammo enjoys everything and anything!  He loves meeting friends, playing with toys and absolutely loves to play fetch!  Ammo is a very active dog and it shows through his excitement when out and about.

It is evident how loved Ammo is.  His human thinks the world of him and cares so much for him.  After losing Mocha, having Ammo has brought happiness and brightens their day.  Ammo is very energetic and sometimes a little bit clumsy, but this just makes him all the more of a delight to be around!
